Vitality of the textile cluster in NE Romania
Romanian creative week RCW2023 took place this year from May 19 to 28 in Iasi, Romania. In just 3 years of existence, it has been recognized as the richest and most varied in Europe. Exhibitions, creations and parades made it possible to show the textile creations of students, Romanian or European designers who have formed a partnership with local producers, including TCBL partners. Around this textile creation, architecture, music and digital technology were in the spotlight. The Romanian Creative Week website
###Communities
Our contributions: noticed and applauded
Projects Herewear And shemakes contributed to RCW 2023 through 5 commitments: a multiplicity of garments produced during these different projects, two workshops intended for designers to reflect on extending the lifespan of products through different strategies, a presentation of the research on modular design associated with laser cutting, and participation in the closing conference on the importance of training in creative innovation combined with learning technical and scientific revolutions in textiles, for future generations of girls and of women in textiles and clothing.
###Inclusive
Dynamics of inclusiveness
Developing inclusiveness in a community is a difficult exercise: it is about respecting and building common sense by integrating everyone's differences. A pragmatic way of proceeding is to make each person aware of their unconscious cognitive biases towards the identity of others, then to build with each person the personalized path which will allow them to progress in accepting differences. In the community shemakes, we have clearly chosen to create a feeling of belonging for all those who surround us and join us. And to have an example of our inspiration, feel free to read
###Connexions
THE pitches of May
In May, three online sessions made it possible to connect experts from our projects, members of the different TCBL communities and new entrants to TCBL. This so-called formula of
pitch
allows you to introduce yourself in a very short time (yourself, your company, your organization) and create relationships in a group, which, a priori, would not have had the opportunity to form. This welcome serendipity is a happy legacy of the internet pioneers. To preserve.
###Innovation
Children's (small) clothing is an ideal category for testing the reuse of clothing
Children's clothing has a (very) short lifespan: children grow up quickly and their tastes change easily under the influence of their contemporaries or their heroes. This constraint can become an opportunity to test alternative business models: buy second-hand clothing of good quality (material, design, finishes), which can be used up to a hundred times, buy clothing that can easily be transformed to adapt to the child's body shape or tastes (from a neutral, light color to elaborate color patterns, or from a basic shape to a complex design) or rent for specific occasions. An example
###Innovation
The label Responsible Wool Standard (RSW) revalues ethical wool in the USA
Wool production in the United States began to decline in the 1950s, and reached its lowest level in the 1990s before beginning a slow recovery. Today, the RSW label is awarded to 100,000 farms (5 million sheep) for their production ethics and guarantees that better-cared-for sheep produce better quality wool. This argument has attracted brands like
Janessa Leone
which today uses wool from Jane Carver's ranch.
###Innovation
Fungi that destroy polyethylene: Aspergillus terreum And Engydontium album
Australian researchers from the University of Sydney have shown that polyethylene previously subjected to UV rays or exposed to heat could be decomposed by approximately 25% in 90 days and completely destroyed in 140 days. For the record, it is a plastic widely used in bags (low-density PE) or in high-protection equipment, for example. ex. motorcycle (high density PE).
###Innovation
The startup Carbonfact launches a collaborative carbon footprint calculator
based on a code
open-source
, the basic information of which is supplemented by specialists in life cycle analysis. The methodology incorporates the principles of
Product Environmental Footprint
published by the European Commission. The first products put online are sneakers, whose carbon footprint varies between 3 and 30 kg carbon equivalent per pair!
###Inspirations
Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) x Kith
The architect's foundation and the designer co-developed a production of sneakers (sold in 90 seconds online) inspired by the project Broadacre City : a project imagined by FLW to optimize the use of urban space and reflect on the environmental footprint of cities, which strongly resonates with contemporary challenges. More generally, comparing the skills of architects and clothing designers suggests new sources of inspiration in textiles. Read more
Of friend-shoring to trade?
In times of severe global turbulence, continuing to develop global value chains poses many questions. Redesigning these value chains relies on relocation, either geographical or near-shoring, either based on affinities of values and mutual trust or friend-shoring. Two alternatives to be tested more precisely in the years to come. Read more
The workshops of the Climate Fresco have been followed by 1 million people (including 300,000 in businesses) since their launch in 2018. During a fun 3-hour workshop, 15 to 20 participants are invited to think about climate issues and organize them in a systemic way . This type of game initiated a whole family of frescoes, making it possible to raise awareness of today's issues on the planet, society or the economy. Read more
What if we talked about self-learning algorithms (commonly called, wrongly, “artificial intelligence”)
Today, these algorithms provoke three types of reactions: fear (dystopia), magic (utopia) or realism (heterotopia). This third perception, without denying the disappearance of tasks and jobs linked to automation that the algorithm causes, suggests that it is inevitable and forces us to ask a fundamental question about the value of human work, the criteria which melt and specify it in relation to the work of the machine.
